Needed some gritty/muddy running shots for a quick add to my portfolio, so I called up my friend Courtney, a former Cytomax™ athlete who apparently specializes in modeling from the knees down
. Although we’d just done a climb/run up Mt. Superior the morning before, Courtney always seems to be up for more pain and suffering – which is probably the best way to sum up splashing through the same creek 100 times in a row. Mother nature threatened us with a blank blue sky for most of the morning, and being August there was no real mud to speak of, but I think we squeaked by with a few workable options. Thanks Courtney!

Love your work…thanks for posting this stuff. Curious as to what you shot with, and how you are getting that golden cool look. post processed? how? Thanks again for your great stuff. very inspiring.

This was all shot on a Canon 1DmkIII @10fps with three fast primes (35, 50, & 85mm). Shooting ‘machine-gun’ style is definitely not my favorite way of doing it, but I didn’t have a lot of time to dial in each setup…
Color is mostly done in post (PSCS4) with a small army of curves adjustment layers. I don’t use any presets or actions (beyond the one used to keep everything organized), so absent any outside art-direction the color palette just sort of evolves as I react to the subject matter and whatever mood I’m in

I was beginning to think this blog was a website for your ski portrait images. Great shots! When you said Courtney though, I was thinking your subject was female. I thought, man, that is one burly woman. Then I saw the last shot and felt a little less disturbed. I loved the Norway shots as well. Looks like a great trip.
